Funeral Mass Guidelines

About the Catholic Funeral Rite

The Catholic Funeral is an official, public prayer of the Church for the immortal soul of the deceased and for the consolation of those left behind. It consists of three movements: the Vigil (Wake), the Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Committal (Burial). Please contact the parish office as soon as possible upon the death of a loved one.

Steps to Arrange a Funeral Mass

1. Step 1 — Contact the Parish Office immediately, or have the funeral home contact us to check availability of the church and clergy
2. Step 2 — Submit Documents — including the death certificate of the deceased
3. Step 3 — Plan the Liturgy — the family may choose Scripture readings from prescribed texts and select appropriate music in coordination with the parish
4. Step 4 — Vigil/Wake — the Rosary and other Catholic prayers may be prayed during the wake
5. Step 5 — Funeral Mass and Burial — the priest leads the Mass, followed by the procession to the cemetery for the Rite of Committal

Important Guidelines

• The focus of the Funeral Liturgy is on Christ's death and resurrection, and the promise of eternal life
• Only one person may offer a brief remembrance during the Mass itself; others may speak at the wake or reception
• Secular music is not allowed during the Vigil or Funeral Mass
• Video retrospectives are not permitted during the liturgy — these are more appropriate at a reception
• The Church recommends burial of the body; cremation is permitted but the remains must be treated with reverence and interred in a proper resting place — never scattered

Attire

• Traditional mourning color is black
• Men may wear Barong Tagalog with black trousers or a black armband
• Women are typically dressed in black or white
• Observe proper and respectful church attire throughout

Tungkol sa Katolikong Rito ng Libing

Ang Katolikong Libing ay isang opisyal, pampublikong panalangin ng Simbahan para sa imortal na kaluluwa ng namatay at para sa kaginhawaan ng mga naiwan. Ito ay binubuo ng tatlong bahagi: ang Vigil (Punerarya/Lamay), ang Funeral Mass, at ang Rite of Committal (Libing). Mangyaring makipag-ugnayan sa tanggapan ng parokya sa lalong madaling panahon pagkamatay ng isang mahal sa buhay.

Mga Hakbang para Ayusin ang Funeral Mass

1. Hakbang 1 — Makipag-ugnayan sa Tanggapan ng Parokya kaagad, o ipaabot sa funeral home na makipag-ugnayan sa amin upang suriin ang pagkakaroon ng simbahan at klero
2. Hakbang 2 — Isumite ang mga Dokumento — kabilang ang death certificate ng namatay
3. Hakbang 3 — Planuhin ang Liturhiya — maaaring pumili ang pamilya ng mga Banal na Kasulatan mula sa mga itinakdang teksto at pumili ng angkop na musika sa koordinasyon ng parokya
4. Hakbang 4 — Vigil/Lamay — ang Rosaryo at iba pang Katolikong panalangin ay maaaring ipanalangin sa panahon ng lamay
5. Hakbang 5 — Funeral Mass at Libing — pinamumunuan ng pari ang Misa, sinusundan ng prusisyon patungo sa sementeryo para sa Rite of Committal

Mahahalagang Alituntunin

• Ang pokus ng Funeral Liturgy ay sa kamatayan at muling pagkabuhay ni Kristo, at ang pangako ng buhay na walang hanggan
• Isang tao lamang ang maaaring mag-alok ng maikling alaala sa panahon ng Misa; ang iba ay maaaring magsalita sa lamay o sa pagtitipon
• Hindi pinapayagan ang sekular na musika sa panahon ng Vigil o Funeral Mass
• Ang mga video retrospective ay hindi pinahihintulutan sa panahon ng liturhiya — mas angkop ito sa isang pagtitipon
• Inirerekomenda ng Simbahan ang paglilibing ng katawan; pinahihintulutan ang kremasyong ngunit ang mga abo ay dapat tratuhin nang may paggalang at ilipat sa isang angkop na lugar ng pahinga — hindi kailanman ikakalat

Damit na Isusuot

• Ang tradisyonal na kulay ng pagtatangis ay itim
• Ang mga lalaki ay maaaring magsuot ng Barong Tagalog na may itim na pantalon o itim na armband
• Ang mga babae ay karaniwang nakasuot ng itim o puti
• Sundin ang wastong at magalang na damit pangSimbahan sa buong seremonya
